1889
City council adopted an ordinance granting the right to establish an Electric Plant and provide power for operation of the water works. At a cost of $8,500 J.S. Hardenbeck established an electric light plant, which he sold to the city. The Board of Public Works was established.
1920s
ALP had coal fired boilers that produced steam which was utilized for city steam heat and also to spin generators that produced electricity for the town.
1936
ALP built its first water tower, which was located near Knute Nelson Ball Park.
1945
ALP purchased a diesel-powered generator capable of 1,245 kW of electricity.
1950s
ALP began purchasing electricity from the federal government. The government was generating hydropower from the dams being built on the Missouri River.
1961
ALP’s first water treatment plant was built.
1966
ALP purchased two additional diesel powered generators capable of 4,000 kW of electricity each.
1970s
ALP began buying all of the power for Alexandria from the hydro facilities owned by the federal government. They stopped generating electricity in the Alexandria power plant.
1970s
ALP joined the Missouri Basin Municipal Power Agency. Now known as Missouri River Energy Services.
1975
ALP stopped providing steam heat.
1978
ALP completed a major voltage conversion from 2.4 KV to 13.2 KV. This was a ten-year project.
1978
ALP built its third substation called the Southwest substation.
1980s
With the formation of ALASD, the city was no longer the utility for the sewer system.
1989
100 years of service.
1993
ALP tore down the coal fired power plant.
1996
As water demand grew a new and larger capacity water treatment plant was built.
1997
ALP began its Energy Services Department to implement a load management cycling program for water heaters and air conditioning units.
1998
ALP had an 115KV transmission line brought through Alexandria, which spawned upgrading of existing substations and building the Pole Yard Substation.
2000
ALP began its fiber optic network. Today over 45 cable miles of fiber exist.
2003
Orderly annexation was established, which increased the number of customers served by electric and water.
2003-2015
Every 3 years over the past 12 years a new section of the Alexandria area was brought into the city through orderly annexation, with all city services made available to residents.
2004
ALP was contracted by the City to start billing their storm water fee.
2011
ALP constructed an expansion to the water treatment plant.
2014-Present
ALP began a 15-year plan to convert our electric system from overhead to underground.
2018
A redundant supply line was added to the water treatment plant.
2023
Arvig purchases ALP fiber network.
